• Minimum Approach Distances: The electrical field around a 220 kV line is powerful and can arc over a considerable distance without direct contact. Workers must maintain a safe minimum approach distance at all times, a distance significantly larger than for lower voltage lines.

• Proper Grounding: Before any work begins, the line must be completely de-energized, tested, and grounded using high-voltage earthing and grounding equipment to prevent accidental re-energization and dissipate any stored charge.

• Insulated Tools and PPE: Any tools used for work on or near the line must be rated for the voltage level. Linemen rely on hot sticks and other specialized insulated tools to perform tasks from a safe distance.
